The New Media Ecology of Online Video Reflecting an Art School Community
The assignment of »videoscanning« makes every student produce a short video about any of the art school's events that s/he deems significant – this might be a workshop, a guest lecture, or just enjoying coffee break with colleagues. After joint evaluation, the video is posted on the school website. In three years the practice has grown into a community-wide norm, as all major school events now get spontaneously »videoscanned«./.../ Only positive and creative “interactions of communications media, technology, technique, and processes with human feeling, thought, value, and behaviour” (Nystrom, 1973) can secure self-reflection and improvement in social systems. If designed as communicative (eco)systems, it is especially in pedagogical settings that social media can prove most important – not only as playgrounds and marketplaces of ethical decisions, but also as platforms of aesthetical innovation. --- This is presentation material for a contribution to the Video Vortex #8 conference The Politics, Cultures and Art of Online Video Zagreb, Croatia, May 17th-19th, 2012 (Social networks and online video in the region) //direct vimeo link//
