roject HiLoVv is supported by the European Union in the form of a Lifelong Learning – Intensive Programmes grant. I was part of the team when making a short documentary video. Six videos were made during this workshop, they are called “Discovering the Hidden Live(r)s of Venice”.
The unique island of Sant’ Erasmo, the so called coutryside of Venice, is where simple peope found a special way to make a living.

The second edition of the HiLoVv - Hidden Live(r)s of Venice educational project was devoted to capturing un(dis)covered stories about the manual ingenuity of the Venetian "creative industries". In Xe El Violin we learn from Riccardo Guaraldi about the traditional art of making violins. Shoes to Measure presents Giovanna Zanella and Gabriele Gmeiner, two high-end craftswomen shoemakers who make everything by hand. Sweetly Salty shows us a brave start into the meticulous business of a pizzaiolo and Solo Perle the integration of an immigrant as maker of glass pearls. Delicate surfaces presents Peeta, a successful painter and graffiti artist who, due to safety issues, now only makes graffiti as commissioned work.

Novo leto, v novih prostorih, z novimi deli!

DINOSAURS IN VENICE? //22.11.2012//

Yes, I finally woke up in Venice, city of extremeness. It is fascinating, but to live here you have to get used to it. Everything is so intense and I still feel a little lost. Water everywhere, no hills just here and there you see a tree. Tourists all over. Museum city, which of course hides local people, and students, that you can easily miss if your sight doesn’t reach further than the infrastructure for massive tourism.

But when you turn in another direction and walk into a street that you don’t want to, then you see the beauty of fallen-apart fasades in the medieval labyrinth of this magical city. On the next corner you end up in a stinky restaurant with cheep bad food and you can’t believe that’s possible in Italy. On the wall you see a picture of a dinosaur in Venice, and the laughter makes the bed food more digestible. And then you realize, that Venice is like a big dinosaur being kept alive, for the fun of todays mankind.

students just came in with a bag of booze -- sa(i)d it's for the "after rajko party". while rajko grlic, il professore maggiore a.k.a. the doge of hilovv, is just having his fourth round of mentoring sessions in the splendid isolation of our venerable villa herion, the tide of expectations is getting ever higher -- both sides! good so, as night after night students are honestly dripping audiovisual blood in preparations for that reality check -- as much as they sincerely try to transfer those intricate craft processes of venetian shoe- violin-, grafitti-, pizza- and glassbeads-makers into the language of film, and also the non-film students seem to be enjoying being sunk ankle >> knee >> deep>>er into it all..

Our first plunge into the HiLoVv - Hidden Live(r)s of Venice educational project leads us to interesting encounters:
On one of the Venetian lagoon islands, the Finotello family produces vegetables and delivers them across the sea to their fellow citizens. Elisabetta is the third generation of florists at the infamous San Michele cemetery island. Modou is a Nigerian immigrant who reveals a few tricks of the bag-selling trade to the filmmakers. Riccardo Bonini is a fireman who thought he knew everything about his profession until he came to work in Venice. In the canal city we also meet Francesco and Lorenzo, two “tree doctors” preserving the Venetian gardens, and in Angelina we meet Dino who wanted to break the family gondolier tradition but could not resist the calling.

Ob semestrski razstavi Visoke šole za umetnost Univerze v Novi Gorici in Šole uporabnih umetnosti Famul Stuart so se zopet srečali tudi (vsaj večina) sodelujočih študentov in mentorjev projekta HiLoVv  (Hidden Live(r)s of Venice), delavnice dokumentarnega filma pod vodstvom hrvaškega režiserja Rajka Grlića.
